BIOLOGY OF THE GUT-BRAIN AXIS

GBA.png

The biology of the gut-brain axis is the biology of the vagus nerve that forms a bi-directional channel of communication between the CNS and the ENS. The sensory neurons of the vagus nerve sit within the nodose ganglia and form the channel by which the brain constantly senses and monitors the activity of the ENS and the gastrointestinal luminal contents.

In our lab, we interrogate the nodose ganglia neurons using specific transgenic animals and decode the communication between the two brains, one in the gut and another in the head.
